Please join Joe and Maddy Guenther for Gulfport’s biggest birthday party ever.
This Saturday, November 15, the owners of O’Maddy’s, Gulfport’s flagship restaurant and bar, will thank the community for a quarter-century of support with a street party. The party, in typical O’Maddy’s fashion, will include all the best things about Gulfport – including food from other local restaurants, Beach Bums volleyball tournament, a fashion show from the Gulfport-chic boutique, Bo-Tiki (featuring local celebrities), a silent auction, raffle, and live music – but all the monies raised won’t go into Joe and Maddy’s pockets.
Also in typical O’Maddy’s fashion, the Guenther family will donate all the monies raised at the party to kids and seniors who need a little (or a lot) of help.
Long known for her philanthropy, last year Maddy Guenther started a foundation honoring Gulfport Mayor Emeritus Michael Yakes, called the Michael Yakes Foundation, or MY Foundation. MY Foundation helps the young and old in a variety of ways, including help with paying for things such as food and medical care. MY Foundation also helps with things that make life better for kids.
“We want kids to feel included and be a part of everything Gulfport has to offer. When your mom and dad don’t have a lot of money, there isn’t always money for things like riding the merry-go-round at Oktoberfest, or money to go to the mall and have a slice of pizza,” Maddy says. “At MY Foundation, we want to try and make sure we’re not only doing things for people that they need, we want to give people experiences that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to have.”
Maddy and Joe hope to raise $10,000 for MY Foundation at the birthday party. Joe says he’s confident Gulfport can make that happen.
“This town has a huge heart,” he says. “It’s so diverse that no matter where you live or who you are, you’d probably like to come into O’Maddy’s for a drink. If you want to come down and drop a dollar or two in the 50/50 raffle jar, or if you bid on something at our silent auction that would be a great Christmas gift for someone, well, that’s all we’re asking.”
The street party starts at 2 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 15. 54th Street between Essex and Shore will be closed. Street parking on Shore and Beach will remain open, as will the library, theatre, and senior center lots on Beach Boulevard. SWOOP, a tip-only electric car service, will also be operating. Customers can call 727-201-6161. For more information about the birthday party, call O’Maddy’s at 727-323-8643.
